Segments allow you to quickly see members who perform a defined set of activities. When you add a brand to your dashboard, AE automatically creates a segment called Basic Social Listening that tracks basic brand signals. You can also create your own custom segments such as members that pre-save an album on Spotify or members that subscribed to your newsletter. Custom segment are the perfect way to set up tracking for key campaigns, events or online promotions.
Create a New Segment
- Navigate to the Segments page of your AE dashboard by selecting Segments in the top menu or quick links section.
- Click Add new segment.
- Choose which brand the segment will include by beginning to type and then choosing the brand from the drop down menu.
- Enter a name and description (optional) for your segment.
- Choose whether the segment is live, and which members will be tracked. There are three options:
- Default (no boxes checked): The defined segment activity behavior will be tracked for any member you have in your dashboard.
- Only track activity for registrations: The defined segment activity behavior will only be tracked for members that registered for this segment.
- Only track activity for opt-ins: The defined segment activity behavior will only be tracked for members that have registered for this segment AND have explicitly opted in to allow tracking (e.g. through a checkbox during registration).
- Click the Create segment button to create your segment.
- You can now add an image for the segment by clicking Browse under Change image.
Add Activities
- From the segment's Update page, scroll down to Activity List and click the Create new activity button.
- Enter a descriptive name for the activity.
- Activity score is a number from 1 (default value) to 10 that allows AE to weight the activities. The higher the value, the more important an activity is.
- The Frequency of activity recorded per member field determines how often AE will record an action done by a member. If you leave this field blank, AE will record every time a member does the action. The Frequency drop down allows you to set a time period for the frequency of activity limit.
- Choose a date range for the segment if you want the activity tracking to turn off automatically on a certain date.
- Under Activity details, choose the channel you'd like to include in the segment. Once you've chosen the channel, select the activity from the Select an activity template drop down menu that best fits the segment.
- Depending on what channel and activity you have selected, you may need to fill in more details. For example, for this Spotify album pre-save, you must fill in the Spotify Album ID and the Album Name.
Learn how to create a Spotify pre-save campaign with AE. - Once you've filled in all the details, click the Save activity button to add the activity to your segment.
- You will now see the activity in the list on the segment's page.
Important: It will take AE a couple of hours to start picking up the new data.
